Wayne Brady, 07/13/07, Atlantic City
I don't know if anyone's been to one of Wayne's shows, but I didn't know what to expect. It's reminiscent of a Colin & Brad show, but at times it's more of a one man show. The songs Wayne mostly does on his own and when he plays games, it's just him and Jonathan Mangum. There's also someone on drums and someone on the keyboard, but they're pretty silent.
It opens with Jonathan coming out and introducing the show and then taking suggestions from the audience for strange and/or complicated words that Wayne is going to use in a gansta rap. (Poor Joey; literally two people clapped when he came out. :P) So then Wayne comes out (and he was wearing that same gaudy cross he wore on the first night of Don't Forget the Lyrics but otherwise looking damn fine and pretty fuckable ^_~) and he does his little rap.
After that the show really starts. What I liked most about his show was that it was so radically different from everyone else's. Yeah, there was a lot of singing, but even the non singing games were just not ones I'm used to seeing live. First, Wayne and Jonathan did a "three headed broadway star" type thing, where they told a story back and forth one word at a time. Probably my favorite game of the night, not to mention fucking hillarious. And at one point Wayne cracked himself up and he did that cute little thing he does where he bends over with his hands propped against his knees. I don't know how he can be so cute and so hot all at once.
Next Wayne and Jonathan sang a broadway-type song to an audience member. Seriously, Wayne is really, really fucking touchy. I think I knew that from watching Whose Line, but he seriously touched Jonathan constantly. At one point during the song, where Jonathan was playing Wayne's boss or something, Wayne reaches out and takes Jonathan's hand. And then he just holds it. For literally five minutes. Eventually, Jonathan, who's probably thinking "what the fuck?" calls him on "sexual harrassment," but Wayne goes back to randomly holding his hand later on.
Then they did something Wayne referred to as Film and Theatre Styles, but was really more Hollywood Director. They played through a scene of a woman giving birth, then did the same scene over and over in different styles. Also good and quite funny. And every time they'd start a scene, not just in this game, but throughout the show, Wayne would call for them to black out the stage. I don't know why, but I really, really liked the effect that had. The whole show in general was much more theatrical than any other improv I've seen (except maybe at Groundlings), which is probably kind of pompous, but it's also incredibly enjoyable.
Then, I believe, they played what Wayne called "Props," but was really Living Scenery. This would have been better if the bitches sitting behind us weren't screaming at the audience members called on stage the whole time, but whatever. :P They also played Sound Effects (it's like a fucking staple. Everyone plays Sound Effects) but it was the first time in a looong time where I saw a game of sound effects that didn't end with something on fire and/or someone shouting into a bull horn. And I don't think there was one farting joke that entire game. Thank God. :P Both were really good, actually, and Living Scenery was fun just because it was fresh and different.
After those two, Wayne did a medly of songs with names thought up by audience members. He did Creed, Justin Timberlake, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Prince...and maybe someone else I'm forgetting. But oh my God, has that boy's song making up skills improved since Whose Line. He didn't start a single line with "because." ^_~ And with the lighting and how gorgeous his voice is (not to mention his impersonation skills) it left the last 20 minutes to a half hour feeling more like a concert. Which is probably a turn off to some people, and I know I was never big on the singing games on Whose Line, but it's different in person. Maybe it's just me, but I could totally sit there and listen to that boy sing. His voice has gotten better since Whose Line, too. It's a little deeper, a little smoother and incredibly sexy. Seriously.
And I think that's about all. I know I'd go back to one of his shows. I'm sure it gets stale like Colin & Brad after a while, but it's very different from their show and just a nice break from the monotony.
